Ways to Maintain Older Adult Independence

Independence is self-determination and freedom of thought, selection, and performance. For older adults, independence is the degree of individual autonomy in performing activities of daily living (such as eating, showering, and dressing) and the right to choose. Maintaining independence can provide a sense of purpose, boost confidence, reduce feelings of isolation, and improve one’s well-being. In the United States, independence is closely linked to the overall health and well-being of an older adult. Remaining independent contributes to aging well by being healthier and happier.
Decreased independence in older adults can make them dependent on others and reduce their quality of life. Some older adults may also feel reluctant to accept help or resist support. It is important to understand how to support older adults in maintaining their autonomy and independence.
1. Connect and prevent social isolation
As people age, they experience poor health, caring for a loved one, or the death of a partner, making them feel isolated or lonely. Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, while social isolation is the lack of or having few people to interact with. Loneliness and social isolation can increase the risk of health problems, which can significantly affect one's ability to think, remember, and learn.
Some ways to build connections include scheduling phone calls or video chats and joining groups with the same interests. Volunteer organizations can also offer benefits by sharing their skills with the community and being socially active.
2. Manage stress
Stress can worsen health conditions, speed up the aging process, and affect an older adult’s ability to be independent in general. Meditating, exercising, a healthy diet, and good sleep can help manage stress.
3. Healthy eating
A healthy diet can help strengthen the bones and support the muscles, which allows older adults to maintain their independence. A nutritious diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. Being involved in meal planning and checking healthy options during grocery shopping can support their independence.
If they want to continue eating their favorite traditional recipes, you can discuss together on how to make them healthier, such as substituting olive oil for butter.
4. Stay active
Both physical and mental activities are important. Mental activities may depend on an older adult's interests and can range from learning new skills to reading books and doing crossword puzzles.
Exercise can help decrease feelings of depression, enhance sleep, reduce levels of stress and anxiety, and improve balance. Exercise should be a mix of activities that includes strength training, aerobics, balance, and flexibility. Simple walking around the neighborhood, stretching, and gardening can help older adults maintain physical activity. You can level up these exercises by joining them to also prevent loneliness and social isolation.
5. Regular checkups
Annual health exams and medical screening may help reduce risk factors for diseases and improve chances through effective early treatment. Encourage them to communicate immediately with a doctor or healthcare provider if they experience any symptoms or pain. If they are currently taking medications, ensure that they maintain a list of medications they are taking and share to their health care provider.
6. Voice Out
Ensure that older adults can speak up on things that affect their lives to maintain their independence. Have them decide their routine and how they want to spend their day. You can then discuss together to make it more flexible and incorporate a healthy lifestyle. Encourage them to ask for help if they’re facing difficulty in making adjustments.
While this enumerates the ways an older adult can maintain independence, it is best to schedule an appointment with a doctor or healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive plan suited to each individual.
